Land acknowledgments are not enough. Decolonization is Not a Metaphor (Tuck & Yang, 2012). I live and work on the ancestral and present day lands of the Piscataway People. This land was stolen and its Indigenous peoples dispossessed by settler-colonialism and genocide. The indigenous people of Turtle Island are still here, fighting for liberation & sovereignty. It is our responsibility to take concrete action to return land and sovereignty. With this value in mind, I pay monthly land tax reparations to the LANDBACK Movement, which recognizes “that our struggle is interconnected with the struggles of all oppressed Peoples. It is a future where Black reparations and Indigenous LANDBACK co-exist. Where BIPOC collective liberation is at the core.” I invite you to take committed steps to decolonization through concrete actions that put land back into the hands of Indigenous stewards by regular payment of land tax, challenging institutions that offer acknowledgments without reparations, and supporting Indigenous movements.
